Howl at the Moon: Insights from Economic Prism

“Fate is nothing but the deeds committed in a prior state of existence.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Safety and Care

Throughout American history, uncompromising independence, rugged individualism, and boundless personal freedom have defined the national character. While folklore suggests these traits remain pivotal, we harbor some doubts.

In an ironic twist, Washington has transformed into a money-draining vortex over the past century. Deep within the Capitol Building, legislators and their teams work with a singular focus: to draft new laws that take away your money and curtail your freedom—all in the name of your safety and well-being.

The Federal Register issues new rules, proposed regulations, and notifications every day. A glance through this daily publication reveals a bewildering array of agencies, departments, and commissions engaged in an endless parade of bureaucratic verbosity.

However, the federal government isn’t the only source of encroachment. Many state and local governments impose even stricter measures. For instance, Maryland residents are subjected to a rain tax on their property when it rains.

In Bellingham, Washington, local ordinances dictate strict limitations on the height and positioning of retaining walls. Yard hedges are also under scrutiny, and in New York, regulations even restrict the amount of soda you can consume in one go.

Protection from the Latest Bugaboo

Once, America truly embodied the land of the free. But that was long before 47.7 million citizens began to rely on Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards to secure their daily sustenance. Back then, you could purchase bottled water without the fear of undercover federal agents intervening.

Sadly, the ideals that fueled America’s War of Independence have largely faded into mere notions. Concepts like limited government and personal liberties have given way to expansive governance and collectivism. The days when one could earn a living free from the IRS’s scrutiny are long gone, as are those moments of emailing without government oversight.

Remarkably, most individuals appear indifferent to the ongoing erosion of their freedoms. Americans have adapted to systematic violations of their constitutional rights and the minute regulation of their private lives—it’s a reality they’ve known throughout their lives.

Public indignation has turned into complacency. Despite recent revelations from Edward Snowden regarding the NSA’s illegal surveillance of private communications, tangible public outcry remains elusive. These are the same individuals who once vehemently opposed John Adams for the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1789.

Yet, the absence of public outrage isn’t astonishing. Many citizens accepted TSA body scans years ago and now stand by as the NSA breaches their Fourth Amendment rights—all under the guise of safety from the latest threats.

Howl at the Moon

Sadly, this is yet another illustration of Americans forfeiting their independence and personal freedoms. With Independence Day approaching, it serves as a reminder not just of what is, but of what we hope to reclaim.

So, how do we feel about a government that’s financially unstable with leaders who deceive us?

In essence… we don’t. And even if we did, what power do we really wield?

All we can do is observe with a mix of humor and incredulity.

Resisting these leaders as they lead our nation into destitution and strip us of our freedoms—in the name of safeguarding our well-being—seems futile. It appears destined to happen, and who are we to impede progress?

Nonetheless, life persists: our loved ones will remain charming, our coffee will continue to have its bold flavor, and the aches from a long day’s work will still be there. The sun will rise, birds will sing, and flowers will bloom.

Even as the nation declines and Joe Biden smiles while he takes from us for our supposed benefit, we respond with smiles of our own, determined to celebrate.

In the spirit of joyous rebellion, and in defiance of city regulations, let us ignite a Piccolo Pete and howl at the moon.

And let us celebrate the Independence of These United States.

Wishing you a delightful holiday!

Sincerely,

MN Gordon
