Running Toward Wellness: The Rise of Fitness Tourism in Bali
On February 8th, Bali celebrated the remarkable success of the Sanur Bali International Half Marathon, an event that invigorated the local community and attracted fitness enthusiasts from around the globe. With an impressive lineup of events planned through 2026, Bali is embracing a new era of health and wellness tourism aimed at benefiting both local residents and the expected influx of 7 million international tourists this year.

The Sanur Bali International Half Marathon was not just a race; it was a community celebration featuring an inclusive atmosphere with distances for everyone—5km, 10km, and a half marathon of 21km. The scenic route showcased the stunning coastal paths, bustling urban areas, and iconic landmarks, allowing participants to experience the rich culture and heritage of Bali.
The event drew nearly 5,000 runners from 30 different countries, attracting around 15,000 supporters, including both locals and tourists.
Organized by Raja Lari in conjunction with the renowned Prama Sanur Beach Resort, the marathon aims to boost local tourism and foster international sporting events in Bali.
I Gusti Bagus Surya, the General Manager of Prama Sanur Beach Resort, remarked, “This event builds on the previous Sanur KulineRun. We hope to enhance tourist confidence in Bali, especially in Sanur.” This collaboration is designed to provide a professional, safe, and memorable running experience for participants from around the world.
Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, events like the Sanur Half Marathon are expected to draw more tourists eager to combine travel with fitness. Many will plan vacations around the races, further enriching their experience in Bali.

Bali is transforming from a beach enclave to a hub for fitness and wellness activities. Whether it’s running, padel, surfing, or yoga, visitors often find themselves engaging in more rigorous activities during their stay than they do at home. The island boasts high-quality, affordable sports facilities that attract fitness enthusiasts from all walks of life.

The running community in Bali is flourishing, providing a social outlet for both locals and tourists. Run clubs, such as the FLOWERBOY Run Club in Seseh, meet regularly for 5km and 10km runs, embracing the camaraderie of fitness.

Trail running is also gaining traction in Bali. The annual BTR Ultra event will take place at Mount Batur from May 15-17, 2026, offering various distances from 6km to a challenging 106km ultra-marathon. Registration is already open for this highly anticipated event.
