Editing Insights
Editing is Only Good If the Editing is Good and a Lot of Editing is Not Good Freddie deBoer. The editor of my book had recently transitioned from marketing and would send emails saying “It detracts from the reader’s flow.” Working with her helped me overcome my inhibitions and express frustrations to my agent more openly. Tension peaked when they unexpectedly mandated a strict format for footnotes after I had submitted half the chapters. I refused to revise already completed chapters, highlighting self-censorship among many authors who encounter subpar editing experiences. However, my interactions with editors at magazines and major online platforms have been overwhelmingly positive.
