On Friday, the statistics ministry of New Delhi unveiled its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, aimed at enhancing user access to official datasets through private artificial intelligence (AI) applications. This innovative initiative will allow users to obtain verified information and insights in real time. Notably, AI platforms, including Claude and ChatGPT, can now be directly linked to eSankhyiki, the national portal for official statistics.
The beta version of the MCP server currently provides access to seven crucial data products, such as:
- Periodic Labour Force Survey
- Consumer Price Index
- Annual Survey of Industries
- Index of Industrial Production
- National Account Statistics
Additional datasets are expected to be included in the upcoming months. The ministry of statistics and programme implementation (MoSPI) emphasized that the MCP server represents a significant advancement in establishing the data infrastructure necessary for a developed India, or Viksit Bharat.
This initiative not only enhances the accessibility of vital statistical resources but also supports the growth of informed decision-making across various sectors.
