CARTERVILLE, Ill., (KBSI) — In a testament to the importance of quick thinking and training, three employees from John A. Logan College were honored this week for their heroic response to a medical emergency at the Logan Fitness facility.

On the evening of January 9, a gym patron suddenly collapsed while exercising. Thanks to the swift actions of fellow patrons, staff members Corene Sizemore, Madison Calvin, and Kassie Teal were alerted right away.

Sizemore was the first responder on the scene, where she immediately assessed the situation. Calvin swiftly called 911 while Teal rushed to get a portable automated external defibrillator (AED). Teal administered rescue breaths, which helped the patron regain consciousness and start breathing normally again. Emergency medical services arrived shortly after and transported the individual to a local hospital.

Fortunately, the patron is now recovering and is in stable condition.

In recognition of their valiant efforts, College President Kirk Overstreet bestowed Merit Service Awards upon Sizemore, Calvin, and Teal during the February 4 meeting of the John A. Logan College Board of Trustees.

Logan Fitness Director Dr. Bradley Griffith expressed gratitude to the board and Overstreet for honoring the three employees, highlighting that their actions exemplified the significance of preparation and training in emergency situations.

“At Logan Fitness, we continually train for scenarios like this,” Griffith stated. “On that night, these ladies remained calm, leaned on their training, worked collaboratively, and ultimately saved a life.”

The college officials applauded the employees for their professionalism and composure, emphasizing that their actions are reflective of the institution’s commitment to safety and well-being within the campus community.
