Loon Mountain Resort is gearing up for a significant expansion, proposing the addition of a fourth peak to the west, which would overlook downtown Lincoln. Over the past six years, the resort has seen substantial growth, including the opening of South Peak and upgrades to key lifts, such as the Kancamagus 8.
The expansion is a key part of Loon’s ambitious “Flight Path: 2030” investment plan, launched in 2020. This initiative aims to add a total of 280 acres to the resort—145 acres designated for new trails and 135 acres intended for tree and glade skiing. Four new lifts are set to facilitate access to approximately 1,500 vertical feet, with the summit reaching an elevation of 2,324 feet.
The project also envisions new lodges at the summit and potentially at mid-peak, along with a direct connection to downtown Lincoln, enhancing accessibility for visitors to the area.
Brian Norton, President and General Manager of Loon Mountain Resort, emphasized the benefits of the expansion: “This new peak delivers on progression. The lower trails will give skiers and snowboarders confidence to move up without a big jump in difficulty, while experienced skiers will find a variety of options, from classic trails to challenging tree skiing.”
However, the proposal is still in its early stages, and completion is a long way off. The resort will undertake the expansion in phases, navigating through extensive local and federal permit processes before establishing a concrete timeline. The proposed area encompasses both federal and private lands, primarily within the White Mountain National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service has accepted the proposal for review, including an environmental assessment.
Additionally, as part of the Flight Path: 2030 plan, Loon aims to introduce Black Ridge, offering 272 acres of “expert-level gladed terrain” by the winter of 2027-28. This development is expected to crown Loon as New Hampshire’s largest ski resort. Planned upgrades also include the gondola lift, enhanced lodging facilities, and advancements in snowmaking technology.
