Celebrating Our Fifth Goal: Next Up, Karōshi Prevention!

Thanks to the generosity of over 1,140 members of the Naked Capitalism community, we have successfully reached our first five goals. These include funding our essential IT infrastructure and defenses, supporting the comments section, continuing our popular Coffee Break and Sunday movie features, expanding our Links section, and providing bonuses to our guest bloggers.

Although we gained momentum from the second Art_DogCT “Double Your Donation” challenge, we are still short of our target necessary for maintaining the level of coverage you expect throughout 2027. If you haven’t contributed yet, please, visit our Tip Jar and give generously! If you’re able, consider making a larger donation to help uplift those who have already contributed despite their own limited resources.

Currently, we have raised $2,010 towards our new goal of $24,000 aimed at preventing karōshi, or burnout.

Our sixth goal focuses on hiring additional staff to ensure we can sustain our near 24/7 coverage throughout the year.

If Yves the publisher and Yves the employee were two separate individuals, the employee would have gone on strike long ago.

You may be familiar with the term karōshi, a Japanese word meaning “death by overwork.” The Guardian reported on this concerning trend:

Japan has once again been forced to address its work culture following a ruling by labor inspectors, which stated that the death of a 31-year-old journalist at NHK, the country’s public broadcaster, was caused by overwork.

Miwa Sado, who worked at the broadcaster’s Tokyo headquarters, logged 159 hours of overtime and only took two days off in the month preceding her heart failure in July 2013…. Sado’s death is expected to intensify pressure on Japanese authorities to tackle the alarming number of fatalities linked to excessively long working hours.

Readers have expressed their admiration for our current team’s strength. Their reliability in meeting deadlines and their willingness to support Yves during critical periods are just two of the many ways they excel. Despite their contributions, Yves often takes minimal time off, which sadly includes no vacations.

A major factor in the increased time required for writing and production is our commitment to improving our content and expanding our coverage areas. Where our Links section once featured 25-30 links, it frequently exceeds 70 today, and sometimes even more.

Even on her days off, Yves manages the business aspects of the site, addressing overlooked emails, catching up on research, and vetting pitch ideas. However, the occasional breaks she receives thanks to your support make a significant impact and are greatly valued.

Before the current crisis, when anyone acquainted with finance was a beacon of insight, many of our posts included brief commentary on excerpts from news articles. Today, a substantial portion of Naked Capitalism’s output consists of high-quality, quick-turnaround political economy analysis. We aim to deliver think tank-level work while clarifying complex issues and holding individuals accountable. This shift has resulted in a higher average writing time per post.

We seek $24,000 for support concerning weekends, travel, and unforeseen circumstances. Notably, this amount remains consistent with our requests from the past three years. We trust that you understand the importance of this funding and will donate generously, allowing Yves to remain committed while enabling talented writers such as Nick, Conor, KLG, Haig, Nat, Curro, and Semper Loqitur to contribute more frequently.

We are grateful for the thoughtful notes from our donors. Here is a sampling of their messages:

From Bryce C:

I mailed a check for $500 this afternoon. Last year it was $400, but due to Trump’s tariffs and inflation, I increased the amount by 25%. I hope this donation doubles. I worry about Naked Capitalism being debanked. While I believe you are partial to cats, a debanking would be disastrous, so I hope some dubious AI doesn’t confuse NC with a group of terriers and try to take your resources. I trust you have contingency plans in place. Keep up the great work; I’m concerned about you burning out.

Thank you so much for NC. It fulfills a crucial role—not only keeping readers informed but also keeping them engaged. I deeply appreciate what you’ve built, and despite some changes over the years, the lineup of regular contributors remains consistently impressive. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

From Susan W:

Thank you for your newsletter! It has kept me informed and somewhat sane.

From Elizabeth Y:

So THANK YOU!!! We are blind without you.

Some supporters have gone above and beyond. From Mark B:

On the way. $10. You don’t want to know what I live on.

We are deeply appreciative of this contribution and hope that others who are in a better position will consider supporting Mark B’s generosity.

There are several ways to contribute. You can start right here on the blog via our Tip Jar, which connects you to PayPal and our new payment service, Clover. You can utilize a debit card, credit card, or PayPal account (the charge will appear as Aurora Advisors).

Additionally, you can send a check (without any intermediary fees!) made out to Aurora Advisors Incorporated at the following address:

Please also send an email to yves@nakedcapitalism.com with the subject line “Check is in the mail” (and include the amount in the message) so we can accurately track your contribution.

We are seeking a total of $24,000 for sick days, weekend, and travel coverage and are currently at $470 towards that goal. Thank you immensely for your generous support!
