Weekly Review by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis (October 4)

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed key challenges in his recent review, focusing primarily on the energy crisis and the government’s strategies to alleviate its impact on households and businesses. Here are some highlights:

Energy Crisis Measures

  • Increased Subsidies: The government is raising the subsidy on road diesel from 10 to 15 cents per liter, which will total around 20 cents with refinery discounts. Measures for heating oil will be announced shortly, aiming to keep prices below €1.75 per liter.
  • Fiscal Flexibility: Greece is advocating for greater fiscal flexibility within the EU, urging the use of additional VAT revenues from high prices to directly support citizens and businesses without breaching expenditure ceilings.

Response to Weather Crises

  • Emergency Measures in Crete: Following severe weather in Crete, the government is actively mobilizing resources to assist affected citizens. A delegation is set to assess damage and aid restoration efforts.

Debt Repayment Arrangements

  • The repayment plan for overdue debts to tax authorities and social security funds is extended to 120 installments, with a minimum payment of €30 and low-interest rates.
  • Stricter regulations for servicers have been introduced to protect borrowers from foreclosure, including automatic penalties for breaches of agreed arrangements.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the ongoing European energy crisis, emphasizing the need for coordinated action and a genuine relief framework for citizens. He remains committed to navigating these challenges while ensuring the well-being of the Greek populace.
