Beyond the Marketplace: Honoring Latino Heritage in Midlothian

Latino Farmers Market: A Community Hub of Culture and Commerce

Deborah Aguilera, Contributing Writer

Music and food fill the Latino farmers market at 13900 Hull Street Road every Saturday from April 4 to Oct. 31, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Vendors sell a variety of handmade products, foods, and other goods, providing local businesses an opportunity to connect with the community and meet new customers.

One notable vendor is RVA Bakehouse, established by Kim Buehler in 2023. Since opening their storefront in Libbie Mill last October, they have been a popular presence at the farmers market. Stephanie Maranon-Estrada, a VCU alumna, represented the bakery and expressed her appreciation for the market’s lively atmosphere and diverse activities that cater to all ages.

The market features a variety of activities, including painting, games, and a moon bounce, making it a family-friendly environment.

Snyder Family Farm, a family-owned business based in Keysville, also makes weekly appearances at the market. Co-founded by Heidi and Jeremy Snyder, the farm raises cattle, pork, chicken, and turkey. Heidi Snyder explained that they started their business to provide better and safer food options for their family, stating, “It’s more wholesome than what’s at the store.” Heidi noted that this market is her favorite, citing the community vibe and good business opportunities.

The goal of Snyder Family Farm is to encourage others to buy local and connect with their food sources. Heidi believes it is important for consumers to know where their food comes from.

Attending the market for the first time was third-year VCU pre-dental student Safa Mahmood. After hearing about the event, she enjoyed exploring various stands, sampling food, and taking in the live entertainment. Mahmood noted that the variety of vendors was one of her favorite aspects and that the entertainment enriched the market experience, fostering a sense of community.

For Mahmood, the market provided a chance to discover local businesses and explore something new. She appreciated the inviting atmosphere and array of activities, making her eager to return.

From food and handmade goods to clothing and more, each vendor brought something unique. For more information on upcoming events, visit latinofarmersmarketva.com.
