Leavell College Unveils New Degree Option Featuring Bachelor of Science Program

New Degree Pathway at Leavell College: Tentmaker Degree Pathway

By Timothy Cockes, NOBTS

New Orleans — Leavell College at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS) has announced an innovative educational pathway called the Tentmaker Degree Pathway. This program aims to prepare students for ministry while providing essential theological education and vocational training.

Key Features of the Tentmaker Degree Pathway:

  1. Bachelor of Science Degree: Four majors are available:

    • Biblical Studies
    • Ministry and Marketplace
    • Intercultural Studies
    • Theology
  2. BS+MDiv Track: A new degree track enables students to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in as little as five years.

  3. Bachelor of Arts: A major in Business & Leadership is now offered.

Rationale Behind the Pathway

NOBTS President Jamie Dew emphasized the growing need for bi-vocational and co-vocational leaders in ministry. He noted that many church planters and missionaries require secular employment to support their ministry work. Furthermore, Dew highlighted the importance of equipping students with both theological knowledge and vocational skills.

“Most of our church planters have to get secular jobs to support their ministry work… ministers need not just the theological education but also vocational training,” Dew said.

Educational Approach

The Tentmaker Degree Pathway allows students to partner with community colleges to receive both theological training at Leavell College and vocational certifications.

Historical Inspiration

Greg Wilton, dean of Leavell College, referenced the Apostle Paul as an inspirational figure for this program. In Acts 18, Paul worked alongside tentmakers while spreading the gospel, reflecting the dual purpose of these degrees.

“These tentmaker degrees help students who want to serve God in this manner,” Wilton noted.

Future Prospects

NOBTS has initiated conversations with local community colleges to facilitate partnerships for student credits. The overarching aim is to allow any college student to transfer vocational credits from accredited institutions to Leavell College.

“This is a very innovative way to meet the needs of the day while staying in our mission as a seminary,” Dew affirmed.
