Thales Alenia Space and NIGCOMSAT Collaborate on NigComSat-2A Satellite

Cannes, September 14th, 2026 – Thales Alenia Space has partnered with Nigeria’s government-owned NIGCOMSAT Ltd to develop NigComSat-2A, a telecommunications satellite intended to enhance digital connectivity across Africa from a geostationary orbit.

The NigComSat-2A satellite aims to provide secure communication services, including:

  • High-quality television broadcasting
  • Fast internet access for remote areas
  • Advanced digital applications like voice calls and streaming services

This development will enhance digital services in underserved and remote communities, facilitating broader access for households, businesses, and public institutions across the continent.

With a launch mass of nearly 4 tons, NigComSat-2A will cover regions from West and Central Africa to Southern Africa. The satellite is designed to provide flexibility and resilience to Africa’s communications infrastructure, thereby supporting the continent’s digital economy and growing connectivity needs, especially in areas lacking robust terrestrial networks. Its expected service life exceeds 15 years and will be built on Thales Alenia Space’s Spacebus B2 platform.
