A Kentucky State University women’s basketball player from Senegal, Aminata Seck, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last month upon her arrival at the Louisville airport.
At 26 years old, Seck is currently on a student visa, as confirmed by her attorney, Sadiqa Reynolds. Seck was detained on August 7 while preparing to fly to New York for an HBCU tournament. Reynolds indicated that Seck might have missed a visa deadline due to recovering from back surgery and dealing with an ACL injury.
Since her arrest, Seck has been transferred between multiple detention facilities and is currently in a hospital, experiencing significant pain.
ICE has not provided details regarding the rationale behind her detention or her current conditions. Seck is listed in the Grayson County Detention Center registry under a charge from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE.
Local Democratic U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey has stated that he is monitoring Seck’s situation, emphasizing her status as a student-athlete who was apprehended while traveling with her teammates.
Seck has had notable achievements in her basketball career, including being named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Conference Third Team and receiving the SIAC Women’s Basketball Elite 16 award for exemplary academic and athletic performance. Kentucky State University declined to comment on the matter, citing privacy concerns.
