Transportation Officials Report Travel Disruption Due to Aging Circuit and Backup System Failure | National News

Ground Stops and Flight Delays Disrupt Major Northeast Airports

At least five major airports in the Northeast faced significant ground stops and delays on Monday due to failures in both an aging circuit and its backup system, according to transportation officials. The disruptions occurred while world leaders gathered for the United Nations General Assembly, causing Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney to miss a scheduled summit.

The affected airports—Newark Liberty International, Teterboro, Philadelphia International, LaGuardia, and John F. Kennedy International—are all serviced by the Philadelphia TRACON facility, which integrates radar approach and air traffic control operations. Newark experienced the highest number of cancellations globally, with over 300 flights canceled, accounting for more than half of its scheduled departures.

Verizon reported that a fiber cable, running near an Amtrak rail line in New Jersey, was cut by construction contractors. They stated they are working to repair the damaged cable and restore connectivity.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has emphasized the need to modernize the nation’s outdated air traffic control infrastructure. Following the incidents, he announced plans for a new AI tool intended to aid air traffic controllers.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford confirmed that a planned replacement for the aging circuit had failed and that a break in the backup fiber was discovered when the system switched over. While a new circuit was set to be installed on Monday afternoon, repairs could take up to 13 hours.

Both Bedford and Duffy pointed to the long-standing need for new funding to upgrade traffic control systems, highlighting that the existing infrastructure has remained largely unchanged for decades.

This outage is not a new issue for TRACON; prior incidents and concerns about safety have surfaced in the past, although officials have reassured the public that safety remains a priority.

As repairs progress, the timeline for resuming normal operations is still uncertain.
