AHS Band Leaders Share ‘Science of Sound’ with Julian Newman Elementary Students

Dr. Lloyd Jones and the Pride of Athens Golden Eagle Marching Band Leadership Team recently visited Julian Newman Elementary School (JNES), where Athens High School students brought science to life through music for first graders.
Before this week’s Fall Break, Dr. Jones and AHS band members provided an up-close look at how instruments create sound through vibration, airflow, and resonance.
The AHS band members demonstrated various instruments, including brass, woodwinds, and percussion, while helping first graders discover fascinating connections between STEM and the fine arts. The visit was a hit, with the students loving the musical performances.
This engagement followed the first graders’ recent studies on the science of sound. In the coming weeks, JNES students will design and build their own musical instruments while exploring sound waves, frequency, and pitch.
