Japan has reclaimed the top position in the 2026 Travel and Tourism Development Index, according to the World Economic Forum, surpassing 110 economies. Following Japan are the United States in second, Spain in third, Australia in fourth, and France in fifth. Following a decline to third place in the 2024 rankings, this recent success is attributed to Japan’s rich cultural resources, enhanced transport infrastructure, and efforts to distribute tourists more evenly to combat overtourism.
The report highlights that Japan’s strategy of broadening its visitor base and promoting travel beyond major tourist hubs has effectively reduced concentration risk while simultaneously achieving outstanding tourism results.
