WALLA WALLA — As the new school year starts, Walla Walla Public Schools is emphasizing student culture and community ties, while closely tracking enrollment changes that could influence finances.
During the summer, the district organized its ACL Summit, where educators engaged with student panels, community partners, and experienced bus rides through the district to gain a deeper understanding of local realities. Superintendent Dr. Ben Gauyan mentioned the goal was for staff to “walk in students’ shoes.”
This commitment to community extends to early learners, with grant funding aimed at children up to three years old at the Center for Children and Families, with operations anticipated to begin in mid-2027. Gauyan highlighted the pressing need for daycare options in Walla Walla.
While the district has faced declining enrollment trends, there was a positive sign this year: initial enrollment was around 40 students above what was expected, despite an overall loss of approximately 113 students. Such trends are closely monitored as they have significant implications for budgeting and resource allocation.
Gauyan reassured the community that, despite enrollment issues, financial conditions remain stable with a healthy fund balance. The district is committed to using enrollment data to inform future decisions about student and family services while pursuing its Vision 2030 goals in literacy and partnerships across schools.
