Blessing of the Animals Celebrated at Mission San Luis
NORTHWEST TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) — A joyful gathering of dogs, cats, rabbits, and other pets took place at Mission San Luis for the 22nd annual Blessing of the Animals, aligning with the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
For first-time attendee Maddie Westfall, bringing her puppies was a meaningful experience. She expressed the importance of including pets in everyday life, noting that social interactions benefit both pets and their owners.
Katelyn Hancock brought her dog Gunny, who celebrated his third birthday at the event. She emphasized the significance of integrating their pet into their Catholic faith by participating in this unique tradition.
Trampas Alderman, executive director of Mission San Luis, highlighted the historical roots of the event. St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Friars, is central to the site’s history, as the friars were present in the area from 1656 to 1704.
Mission San Luis serves as a historical site, showcasing reconstructed buildings and exhibits that tell the story of the Apalachee and Spanish communities. The Blessing of the Animals occurs inside a reconstructed 17th-century Spanish church, enhancing the connection between faith, history, and the community.
