Legacy Business Month Celebrates Local Austin Businesses
Austin is a city in constant evolution, yet its heart beats through the longstanding local businesses that define its culture and identity.
For the fourth consecutive year, Preservation Austin is celebrating Legacy Business Month this October, honoring independent businesses that have been instrumental in shaping Austin’s community. Lindsey Derrington, Executive Director of Preservation Austin, recently joined Sierra Waggoner and Trevor Scott on We Are Austin to discuss this year’s highlighted businesses and how locals can participate through the Legacy Business Month Passport.
What Defines a Legacy Business?
To qualify as a legacy business, a company must have been operational for at least 20 years, reflect Austin’s unique culture, and operate as a single-location independent establishment. As Derrington eloquently stated, “If we lose them, we lose a piece of who we are as a city.”
This year’s featured businesses include:
- Callahan’s General Store
- One in a Million
- Casey’s New Orleans Snowballs
- The Tavern
- Boggy Creek Farm
- Texas Chili Parlor
- Westgate Lanes
- Coco’s Cafe
- Shenanigans Nightclub
- Elysium
Get Your Legacy Business Month Passport
The Legacy Business Month Passport is free and available at participating businesses and additional pickup locations. Collecting stamps from each location you visit after making a purchase will enter you into a raffle for local prizes, including stays at The Driskill and Hotel San José.
“It’s a really fun, dynamic way just to get to know Austin better and to reconnect with the city,” Derrington expressed.
Kick Off the Celebration
The festivities will begin at Zilker Brewing Company, where guests can grab their passports and even have a passport photo taken. Zilker Brewing will also create a special Legacy Business Month beer, contributing a portion of proceeds to Preservation Austin.
Austin City Council has officially designated October as Legacy Business Month, encouraging residents to rediscover and support the local gems that make the city so unique.
