Huntington Beach council hopefuls discuss commerce at chamber event

Huntington Beach is currently navigating its business environment amid varying opinions on how business-friendly the city is. This was the focal point of a recent Chamber of Commerce forum featuring ten City Council candidates, including incumbents and new hopefuls.

During the two-hour event, the candidates responded to questions from Chamber President Max Daffron. Participants included current mayor Casey McKeon, past mayor Pat Burns, and other candidates like Brian Burley, Andrew Gruel, and Taryn Palumbo.

A pivotal moment came when candidates were asked to express their views on whether the city is business-friendly; while seven declared yes, three—Burley, Glim, and Spivey—expressed dissent, citing barriers to business growth.

McKeon emphasized the council’s accomplishments, such as reductions in homelessness and crime, as well as initiatives like the Streamline Surf City program, which aims to facilitate business permits. He noted that this effort helped attract major companies to the city.

Conversely, Burley criticized the challenges of permitting processes, suggesting they deter potential businesses. He highlighted a need for better support for local enterprises.

Candidates also shared divergent views on financial strategies. Most opposed raising sales tax but suggested reevaluating transient occupancy taxes. The forum also touched on the contentious topic of closing sections of Main Street permanently, with a majority opposing the idea.

Future initiatives discussed included a proposed business incentive program aimed at attracting investment, although McKeon seemed ambivalent about it. Candidates unanimously supported reforms in procurement processes to boost local businesses.

Discussions also covered the potential for projects like the California Resources Corp. housing development, raising concerns about balancing community interests with economic growth, a challenge Burns acknowledged.

Overall, the candidates reflected a spectrum of insights and strategies, with some advocating for more robust communication and transparency to better align city decisions with community needs.
