Portuguese Hospital Allows Pet Visits to Patients: A Potential Shift in Care Approach?

São João Hospital in Portugal has initiated an innovative program called “Pets and Company,” allowing approved hospital patients to receive visits from their pets. Launched on July 9, the initiative aims to reduce isolation and ease the burdens of lengthy hospital stays, recognizing pets as vital parts of patients’ families.

The program involves a collaborative effort from various hospital services and utilizes a protocol that assesses the clinical need for pet visits on a case-by-case basis. Only certain patients, particularly those who are terminally ill or have long-term stays, can take advantage of this service. The protocol requires that pets meet health and behavioral criteria, including up-to-date vaccinations.

Patients have reported significant emotional benefits from these visits, including improved mood and motivation. Studies indicate that such interactions can lower stress levels and contribute positively to recovery.

Though some worry about potential health risks, no infections have been reported since the program’s launch. The initiative reflects a balanced approach between patient care and strict infection control, advancing the idea of pet therapy to enhance the hospital experience without sacrificing safety.
