Unexpected dog breed declared the most masculine by a pet specialist

The Rise of Small Dogs and Modern Masculinity

In her upcoming book, “Yap! A Short History of Small Dogs,” animal historian and pug owner Stephanie Howard-Smith discusses how modern men showcase their masculinity by parading around tiny dogs. She suggests that owning a small dog signifies confidence, eliminating the need to overcompensate with larger, traditional breeds.

Howard-Smith’s book delves into 2,500 years of the relationship between men and small dogs, focusing on how these pint-sized companions have evolved in popularity. Celebrities like Chris Evans, Orlando Bloom, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson are notable examples of this shift, frequently sharing their lives with smaller breeds.

Interestingly, a 2022 study indicated that women feel more comfortable around men with small dogs, suggesting societal changes in perception regarding masculinity. Howard-Smith argues that a preference for smaller breeds reflects a departure from outdated stereotypes, where larger dogs defined masculinity.

Her approach serves as a celebration of these tiny companions, calling them a “love letter” for their role in providing companionship. The positive response to her book emphasizes the growing affection for small dogs, reaffirming their place in contemporary culture.
