BMW secures Chinese tech accolade for its Gen6 battery pack.

BMW’s recent win at the 2026 World New Energy Vehicle Congress underscores the technical credibility that a foreign automaker can achieve in China’s competitive environment, particularly regarding battery technology. The company received the “Global New Energy Vehicle Innovative Technology” prize for its Gen6 high-voltage battery, becoming the sole non-Chinese automaker to be recognized in this category.

The Gen6 battery, developed from high-nickel round cells, is a key component of BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicle lineup. This achievement marks BMW’s sixth recognition at the Haikou event, showcasing their continuous innovation with eDrive technology, which has resulted in over 500 patent applications.

Thomas Engelhardt, Senior VP of High-Voltage Batteries at BMW, emphasized that the Gen6 battery features a flat design for improved range and faster charging, while ensuring high safety standards. The innovative design allows cells to be integrated directly into the pack without modules, operating on an 800-volt system with bidirectional charging capabilities.

This recognition highlights BMW’s commitment to technological advancement in electric vehicles and its strategic positioning in the growing Chinese market.
