Japanese and American business executives encourage governments to enhance collaboration on AI.

On Wednesday, Japanese and U.S. business leaders emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation on artificial intelligence (AI) following a conference in Washington. They urged both governments to focus on mutual investment, technological collaboration, and the reinforcement of global supply chains.

David Goeckeler, CEO of Sandisk Corp. and chair of the U.S.-Japan Business Council, highlighted the urgency for dialogue on AI, noting its rapid development compared to previous technologies. The joint statement, endorsed by 130 companies, recommended a governance framework for AI that is interoperable, risk-based, and aligned with international standards.

Further recommendations included supporting joint research initiatives, exploring next-generation energy sources to meet growing power demands, and improving digital infrastructure security. The call for resilient supply chains and predictable trade frameworks was echoed as essential for sustainable economic growth.

Makoto Takashima, head of the Japan-U.S. Business Council, remarked that strengthening the economic partnership is crucial for global stability. The next conference is set for 2027 in Tokyo.
