Seong’s victory marks a significant achievement, making her the first South Korean female to win in this individual event and ending China’s streak of four consecutive gold medals.

Medal Standings

  • Gold: Seong Seung-min (South Korea)
  • Silver: Zhang Mingyu (China)
  • Bronze: Wu Xiyao (China)

Her teammates also competed well, with Kim Un-ju finishing seventh and Shin Su-min placing twelfth, leading South Korea to a commendable second place in the team event behind China.

Background

Seong, a former world champion and Olympic bronze medalist, was a strong contender for gold. She previously won the 2024 World Modern Pentathlon Championships, being the first South Korean woman to achieve such a title, and made headlines at the Paris Summer Olympics for being the first Asian female pentathlete to earn an Olympic medal.

Throughout the Asian Games final, Seong maintained a commanding lead. She excelled in fencing, earning 250 points, and performed impressively in the obstacle course with a time of 29.26 seconds. She further solidified her advantage by clocking 1:01.14 in the 100-meter freestyle and held off her competitors to finish first in the final laser run.

Seong Seung-min’s remarkable performance has not only brought glory to her country but also inspired future athletes in the modern pentathlon.
