Governor Gavin Newsom has signed legislation designating September 25 as Dolly Parton Day in California. This date reflects the significance of Parton’s iconic song “9 to 5” from the 1980 film featuring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
In a video announcement, Newsom praised Parton as an “icon” whose contributions have impacted many. “Dolly was larger than life with big hair and a bigger heart,” he said, highlighting her music, philanthropy, and humor.
Parton passed away on August 25 at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer. Her accolades include 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Country Music Association Awards, and induction into both the Country Music and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame.
Senator John Laird emphasized Parton’s expansive legacy, noting her work with the Imagination Library, which provided millions of children with access to books. He remarked, “Every 9-2-5, California gets to celebrate Dolly and the remarkable legacy she shared with all of us.”
