Aptera recently shared test results showing that its solar electric vehicle can gather over 4 kilowatt-hours of usable solar energy daily under optimal conditions, potentially supporting over 40 miles of driving. TÜV Rheinland conducted the tests at Aptera’s facility in Carlsbad, California, confirming that the vehicle exceeded its 4.0 kWh target over three days of testing.
One notable test involved keeping the vehicle stationary from sunrise to sunset, yielding 4.23 kWh, which could translate to approximately 42 miles of driving, given Aptera’s efficiency of 100 watt-hours per mile. Further adjustments in position improved energy collection to 4.40 kWh and 4.75 kWh, indicating potential ranges of around 44 and 47 miles, respectively.
While these results validate the efficiency of Aptera’s integrated solar system, they do not ensure that production vehicles will achieve the same performance across various conditions. The variability in solar energy generation due to factors such as weather and location must be considered.
As Aptera approaches commercial manufacturing, the key challenge will be ensuring that the efficiency and solar performance can be consistently replicated in production vehicles. This research serves as a promising indication of the capabilities of vehicle-integrated solar technology, but further validation is necessary before it can be deemed commercially viable.
