Workshops emphasize the impact of pets in situations of domestic violence.

Awareness Sessions on Animal Abuse in Domestic Violence

Professionals who work with animals are being invited to attend online sessions designed to raise awareness about how pets can be used by domestic abusers to manipulate and control victims. These sessions, organized by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s domestic violence and abuse partnership team in collaboration with the RSPCA, target professionals such as veterinarians, groomers, and pet care workers.

The training coincides with Domestic Abuse Awareness Month and aims to equip attendees with the skills to recognize signs of abuse. It will focus on understanding how abusers may threaten, harm, or neglect pets to exert control over their victims. Additionally, participants will receive guidance on identifying warning signs and directing those in need to specialized support.

Officials stress that fear for a pet’s safety often serves as a significant barrier for many victims in seeking help or leaving their abuser. Councillor Lyn Healing emphasized the commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, appreciating the collaboration with the RSPCA and pet professionals to bring attention to this crucial issue. The sessions are scheduled for October 14 and 21.
