Community Spirit at Xcel Energy’s Day of Service
Olivia Ranta, an Inclusion and Corporate Impact intern at Xcel Energy, took on the new challenge of sanding wooden playground equipment during the company’s annual Day of Service. Though it was her first time, she embraced the experience, stating, “I feel like I’m getting the hang of it slowly but surely.”
On a Saturday morning, Ranta joined hundreds of volunteers at Mile High United Way, engaging in various community projects—sanding playground equipment, cleaning up wood chips, and organizing toys. This marked the 16th annual Day of Service for Xcel Energy, an initiative that started as a somber remembrance of 9/11 and has since grown significantly.
Robert Kenney, the president of Xcel Energy Colorado, noted the event’s expansion, highlighting, “Each year we have more and more volunteers and projects.” This year alone, over 900 volunteers participated in more than 40 projects spanning three days. Volunteers included not just Xcel employees but also their families and community members.
CBS Colorado Anchor Karen Leigh, also participating, reflected on the collective impact, saying, “It’s really just amazing to see how much you can get done together.”
Ranta emphasized the importance of community engagement, stating, “It really is important to us as a company, and everyone really shows out. It’s a part of who we are as employees.”
