Seeking a Unifying Voice for Bulgarian Culture Globally

Bulgarian Culture Beyond Borders

Bulgarian culture is rich and diverse, traveling with its people across the globe through language, music, literature, dance, and celebrations. However, as Bulgarians find themselves dispersed around the world, a critical question emerges: How can artists from various corners connect, share experiences, and gain visibility, both internationally and in their homeland?

Introduction of ABCOA

To address this need, the Association of Bulgarian Cultural Organisations Abroad (ABCOA) was founded on July 29, 2025, in Sofia, during a constituent assembly at the Library and Information Centre of the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad. By July 2026, ABCOA received official registration, positioning itself as a representative umbrella organization for Bulgarian cultural entities outside Bulgaria.

The nine-member Management Board has a vital mission: to attract and unite Bulgarian artists and cultural organizations worldwide.

Vision and Objectives

According to Vesela Raytchinova, the association’s chairperson and creator of the “Bulgarian Soul of the Holy Land” festival in Israel, ABCOA aims to be a broader platform than traditional cultural associations. Raytchinova’s interactions with Bulgarians abroad confirmed the need for a lasting creative alliance.

She emphasizes the desire to attract not only established organizations but also artists who may feel isolated or unrepresented. This includes writers, visual artists, and various cultural figures who contribute to preserving Bulgarian spirituality, language, and traditions.

Building a Network

The Management Board consists of members from different countries, each serving as a link to specific regions. This strategy aims to establish a network that connects artists and organizations. Raytchinova metaphorically compares the process to crafting a “beautiful, colorful chain,” with each board member adding unique connections and initiatives.

Increasing Visibility

ABCOA also has the goal of highlighting the cultural contributions of Bulgarians abroad within Bulgaria. Frequent gatherings are planned to showcase their work, facilitating interaction between expatriate artists and institutions back home.

Moving Forward

With the organizational phase nearing completion, including the development of an online platform and membership outreach, ABCOA is set to initiate active recruitment of members starting in November 2026.
