The University of Arizona has received $20 million in funding from the Department of Energy’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation. This investment will enhance the San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory by adding underground space, a microgrid, and advanced electronics for research and workforce development.
University President Suresh Garimella expressed pride in this significant milestone, highlighting the importance of the award in establishing the university’s role in securing the nation’s critical minerals supply through education and industry partnerships.
The funding aligns with the DOE’s PROSPECT initiative, aimed at doubling graduates from accredited mining programs in the U.S. Assistant Secretary Audrey Robertson visited the university to engage with faculty and students.
The San Xavier Mine is integral to MiningWerx, a proposed national hub for mining education and workforce enhancement. The facility offers students hands-on leadership opportunities while focusing on developing advancements in technology and environmental outcomes.
Industry collaborator Komatsu America Corp. is actively involved in research and innovation at the lab, emphasizing the importance of decarbonization and enhancing operational productivity in mining.
This funding and development will position the San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory as a global hub for mining research, contributing to national security by strengthening the domestic mineral supply chain.
