‘East of Eden’ Author Zoe Kazan Reflects on Her Childhood Home in Los Angeles

Zoe Kazan, known for her role in “The Big Sick,” has deep Hollywood roots and recently discussed her experiences growing up in a family steeped in film. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal ahead of the premiere of her Netflix miniseries “East of Eden,” she reflected on her childhood and family connections to the industry. With her mother, Robin Swicord, and father, Nicholas Kazan, both accomplished screenwriters, and her grandfather, the legendary director Elia Kazan, influencing her upbringing, the film industry felt like a natural part of her life.

Kazan shared memories of her childhood home in Santa Monica, where her family lived since the 1980s, and recounted spending summers in Washington state for a broader life experience. Now a mother herself, she resides in Brooklyn with partner Paul Dano, where they cherish their historic home.

She appreciates the character of older spaces and enjoys simple treasures, including a $2 leopard painting, and finds joy lying on the living room floor, embracing moments of quiet solitude amidst family life.
