Keep Halloween Calm for Animals: East Bay Times

Protecting Pets and Wildlife This Halloween

As Halloween approaches, it’s essential to prepare for the festivities while ensuring the safety of our pets and local wildlife. Here are some tips to keep your furry friends secure without sacrificing the fun:

Dangerous Decorations

  • Candle Alternatives: Consider using battery-operated, flameless candles instead of traditional ones. They provide the desired ambiance without the fire hazard.
  • Secure Cords: If you’re using electric decorations, ensure that cords are out of reach to prevent chewing or tangling.
  • Avoid Fake Cobwebs: These can harm both pets and birds if ingested or tangled.

Out of Paw’s Reach

  • Candy Precautions: Keep candy bowls well out of reach. Chocolate and candy containing xylitol are toxic to pets and can lead to serious health issues.
    • Signs of Poisoning: Be vigilant for symptoms like vomiting, rapid heartbeat, and excessive thirst. If ingestion occurs, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

Provide a Safe Space

  • Calm Environment: With trick-or-treaters knocking, consider isolating your pets in a quiet room to minimize stress and reduce the chance of them escaping.
  • Relaxation Tools: Utilize calming music or white noise machines to drown out the hustle and bustle of the evening.
  • Identification: Ensure pets have updated identification tags and are microchipped in case they manage to slip out.

Don’t Force Dress-Up

  • Costume Comfort: Only dress pets in costumes if they seem comfortable. Avoid any outfits that could cause anxiety or have parts that could be caught or ingested.
  • Supervision is Key: Never leave your pet unattended in a costume to prevent accidents.

With a bit of foresight and care, Halloween can be a joyful and safe celebration for all members of the family, including our pets. Happy Halloween!
