World Space Week: October 4-10
World Space Week kicks off today, October 4, and runs until October 10. This annual event celebrates the contributions of space science and technology to our quality of life, focusing on education and outreach events organized worldwide by space agencies, schools, aerospace companies, and astronomy clubs.
History and Significance
World Space Week is celebrated starting October 4, commemorating the launch of Sputnik 1 by the Soviet Union in 1957—the first human-made satellite that marked the dawn of the space age. October 10 highlights the enforcement of the Outer Space Treaty, established in 1967, which provides a framework for international space law.
On December 6, 1999, the UN General Assembly proclaimed World Space Week to be celebrated annually from October 4 to 10, promoting international cooperation in the peaceful use of outer space via the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).
Theme of World Space Week 2026
This year’s theme is “Rocket Revolution,” emphasizing the rapid growth of rocket launches and their transformative impact on accessibility to space. The United Nations notes that access to space has broadened from a few government programs to include commercial launch providers, reusable rockets, university teams, startups, and new national space actors.
Events and Participation
Hundreds of events are organized globally during World Space Week. The uniform theme directs the focus of the programs, enhancing their impact and outreach.
