Supreme Court rejects request to prolong Pennsylvania skill games deadline

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has denied a petition that sought to delay the deadline for lawmakers to legislate on skill games. This decision, made on Friday, sets an impending deadline of Tuesday, October 13, after which police can legally confiscate these machines.

The court previously ruled that skill games qualify as “slot machines” under the Gaming Act, giving legislators a 120-day timeframe to create a licensing, taxation, and regulatory framework. This ruling affects various local entities, including nonprofits and volunteer organizations, that depend on revenue from these games.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Susan Affronti expressed concerns regarding the timing of the extension request, questioning why lawmakers waited until now. Rep. Jonathan Fritz acknowledged the slow progress in the Capitol, stressing the importance of careful legislation affecting millions.
