Valens Semiconductor (NYSE: VLN) has entered into a collaboration agreement with onsemi (NASDAQ: ON) to develop a cost-optimized image sensor with MIPI A-PHY connectivity, targeting high-volume automotive camera applications. The announcement was made on September 22, 2026.

Goals of the Collaboration

The primary focus is on integrating Valens’ connectivity technology into onsemi’s image sensors, especially for the 3-megapixel (3MP) segment. The objective is to provide automotive manufacturers and Tier 1 suppliers with a streamlined solution that fosters the adoption of the MIPI A-PHY standard.

Simplified Design Approach

As part of the agreement, Valens will collaborate with onsemi to embed MIPI A-PHY connectivity directly into the image sensor. This integration aims to minimize the number of components in automotive camera systems, thereby supporting industry-standard connectivity.

Ahmed Salem, Vice President and General Manager of the Intelligent Sensing Group at onsemi, noted that the goal is to enable “a more streamlined camera architecture that reduces component count, supports industry standards, and ultimately makes advanced vision systems easier to deploy.”

Market Focus

Valens and onsemi are particularly targeting manufacturers seeking cost-efficient camera systems that can be produced in high volumes. They recognize that most automotive image sensors currently aim for resolutions between 1 and 3 megapixels. Their planned 3MP offering is intended to satisfy an established market while accommodating the rising demand for higher-resolution systems from automotive manufacturers.

Advancements in MIPI A-PHY Connectivity

MIPI A-PHY is an industry standard that facilitates high-speed sensor connectivity in automotive applications. This partnership not only aims to provide OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers with integrated solutions but also builds upon Valens’ prior successes in the automotive sector with its VA7000 MIPI A-PHY chipsets.

Yoram Salinger, Chief Executive of Valens Semiconductor, stated that this new offering enhances Valens’ existing solutions, making A-PHY available for a broader range of applications. He emphasized that collaborating with onsemi strengthens the overall technology ecosystem for the automotive imaging industry.
