The War on Drugs Return with New Music

PHILADELPHIA — The War on Drugs have made a comeback with their first new release in five years. The Philadelphia band, led by Adam Granduciel, has unveiled a new single titled “Who’s That,” a synth-heavy slow-building rock track that crescendos into a powerful finish, characteristic of the band’s style.

Recorded in Granduciel’s studio in Burbank, California, the song showcases him playing nine instruments in a meticulously crafted arrangement. Besides Granduciel, the track features band members Dave Hartley, Eliza Hardy Jones, Jon Natchez, and Anthony LaMarca, who plays drums instead of the usual Charlie Hall or Patrick Berkery.

Accompanying the song is a music video directed by Max Flick, featuring Granduciel wandering the streets of Burbank at night. The video captures moments of introspection, including scenes where a newspaper blows into his face and a poignant moment where he retrieves a guitar from a trash bin.

In a statement, Granduciel shared, “‘Who’s That’ was written in 10 minutes somewhere between first coffee and school drop-off.” He elaborated, saying the song addresses personal struggles like anxiety, depression, and self-doubt while trying to embrace self-love. The lyrics reflect this theme: “There’s a lion hangin on my neck, I can tame it, but he might break free,” he sings, adding, “Who’s that? It’s only my depression, baby.”

The release raises the question of whether “Who’s That” is teaser for an upcoming album, which would be the first since 2021’s I Don’t Live Here Anymore. While there hasn’t been any confirmation, the band is gearing up for a fall tour, starting with two local performances in September.

On September 18, they’ll play at The Queen in Wilmington, followed by a performance at the Sea.Hear.Now festival in Asbury Park on September 19, sharing the stage with notable acts like Mumford & Sons, Chaka Khan, and Shaggy.

Since their last studio release, the War on Drugs released a live album, Live Drugs Again, in 2024. Moreover, Granduciel has produced notable works, including Sam Fender’s award-winning album and Craig Finn’s recent solo project. Last holiday season, the band held a three-night charity event in Philadelphia, benefiting local public schools and featuring guest appearances from various artists.

As fans eagerly await more music, “Who’s That” signals an exciting return for the band.
