Celebrating 40 Years of Dragon Con
When I first entered the Hyatt Regency Atlanta for my inaugural Dragon Con in 2014, I was completely unprepared for the vibrant chaos. With over 70,000 attendees roaming across five hotels during Labor Day weekend, this multigenre convention can feel a bit overwhelming, even for seasoned fans.
As I navigated through throngs of cosplayers on our way to panels and discussions, the energy was palpable. Despite the sticky floors and the large crowds, I quickly became captivated by the experience.
This year marks Dragon Con’s 40th anniversary. Launched in 1987, the convention was designed to embrace multiple fandoms—something unique at the time. Now, it’s recognized as the largest multigenre pop culture convention in the world, where fans can explore everything from anime to robotics and enjoy celebrity guest panels, art exhibitions, and a lively parade that brings thousands to the streets of Atlanta.
Over the years, my husband and I have developed our own traditions, from sipping mai tais at Trader Vic’s to joining the animated crowds at the Late-Night Puppet Slam, hosted by the beloved duo, Bob and Carl.
One of the elements that makes Dragon Con truly special is its tight-knit community, characterized by inside jokes and creativity. A memorable example of this is the “Cult of Marriott Carpet,” which emerged after the hotel’s iconic flooring was replaced in 2016. The unique carpet pattern became a beloved symbol, inspiring cosplay that ranges from Marriott Carpet Stormtroopers to quirky tributes, showing how these playful elements bond the community.
Cosplay is a highlight, showcasing the year’s pop culture trends. While I’ve seen everything from intricate Mandalorian outfits to nostalgic characters like Blanky from The Brave Little Toaster, the craftsmanship is awe-inspiring. Participating in cosplay brings delightful experiences, like hearing cheers as I strolled the halls dressed as Sailor Moon.
After attending for 13 years, our Dragon Con experience has evolved. Late-night dance parties have made way for low-key gatherings at the Cartoon Bebop Lounge. We’re excited to introduce our young son to the magic, planning to take him to the parade so he can wave at superheroes and Pokémon characters.
No matter how our traditions adapt, stepping through those revolving doors will always feel like returning home.
