Li Shufu Talks About Three Key Paths for Global Automotive Expansion; Geely Aims for Complete Carbon Neutrality by 2045

Li Shufu, chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, delivered a keynote speech on September 15 at the 2026 China Economic and Social Forum, highlighting the evolving landscape of globalization. He emphasized that as specialization deepens, the necessity for collaboration increases, while fragmentation poses risks to sustained growth.

Li noted that the automotive industry is undergoing significant transformation, shifting from mere transportation to becoming smart mobile terminals driven by technological innovation. In this context, he outlined three strategic priorities for companies to thrive:

  1. Collaborative Innovation: Success in foundational technologies like chips and operating systems requires joint efforts across academia, industry, and global partners.

  2. Accelerating the Green Transition: Electric vehicles are crucial for achieving carbon reduction goals, and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors are becoming vital in global competition.

  3. Global Industrial Coordination: The industry must work toward dismantling trade barriers and enhancing cooperation on standards to foster a mutually beneficial global community.

Using Geely’s journey as an example, Li pointed out the company’s investments in smart electric systems and green methanol, and its partnerships with international automakers such as Proton, Renault, and Ford. He also mentioned Geely’s commitment to carbon neutrality by 2045 and its active role in shaping international ESG standards.

Li concluded by addressing the ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence, advocating for innovation that respects social responsibility and public interest. He stressed that globalization is not just about expanding markets or capital but sharing technology, culture, and values.
