Celebrating Oktoberfest in Downtown Racine
Racine, Wis. – Downtown Racine is set to host its Oktoberfest celebration on Friday, Oct. 2, featuring stein holding, polka dancing, pretzels, and a selection of German beers.
John Therkelsen, president of the German Club in Racine and a proud German American, played a key role in bringing Oktoberfest to this vibrant setting. “We just partnered with the city, and they thought it’d be a great idea to bring this down here to Monument Square,” said Therkelsen.
Therkelsen will manage the German Club stand, offering special brats from Usinger’s Sausage, Bavarian pretzels, and a variety of German beers. “It’s great to be down here sharing the food and the beers and everything that we value as part of our culture at our club,” he noted.
This Oktoberfest event marks a special occasion as part of the Downtown Racine Corporation’s First Fridays, a monthly themed community celebration. Kelly Kruse, the executive director at Downtown Racine Corporation, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I can feel the energy already. I’m here, and the downtown is ready to show up.” She anticipates up to 10,000 attendees, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the downtown area.
With over 40 food and art vendors set to participate, the festival promises a rich variety of attractions. This celebration aligns perfectly with the conclusion of Oktoberfest in Munich, creating an opportunity for the Racine community to experience some of the traditional German joy.
Downtown Racine has been vibrant this summer, hosting 70 events, with plans to continue various activities until mid-December.
