ZWO’s most advanced smart telescope to date, the Seestar S50 Pro, is perfect for a wide variety of celestial objects.

Exploring the Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse with the Seestar S50 Pro

On August 28, 2026, during a spectacular deep partial lunar eclipse, I had the chance to use the ZWO Seestar S50 Pro telescope. At its peak, 96% of the moon was hidden in Earth’s umbra, with only a sliver illuminated, leaving the rest glowing in a striking pinkish-red hue.

Capturing the Moment with Smart Technology

The Seestar S50 Pro has become indispensable in my astrophotography endeavors due to its efficiency. I’m passionate about photographing the moon, and the design of the S50 Pro allows for quick setup and immediate shooting. This night, I awoke at 3:30 a.m. to capture the eclipse, and with the smart features of this telescope, I escaped the lengthy setups often required for such events.

The Performance of the Seestar S50 Pro

With its 50mm aperture and 8.3-megapixel sensor, the S50 Pro performs exceptionally in various conditions. The telescope is versatile, able to handle varying astrophotography needs, from capturing fleeting moments like a lunar eclipse to deep-sky imaging of galaxies and supernovae.

  1. Quick Imaging: The S50 Pro’s app seamlessly locates and focuses on celestial bodies, allowing for swift image capturing.
  2. Ease of Use: It is user-friendly, making it easy for both beginners and seasoned astronomers to utilize effortlessly.
  3. Adaptability: The telescope can be set up for different modes of astrophotography, from capturing the moon to observing distant galaxies.

Insights from My Experiences

During my recent adventures, I photographed not only the eclipse but also a remarkable supernova in NGC 7331. Being able to catch such astronomical events at a moment’s notice without extensive setups has been gratifying.

The S50 Pro allows for comfortable remote operations. I can leave it to gather data while I stargaze or even engage in traditional astrophotography with other equipment. It truly emphasizes my belief that astronomy should be experienced, not confined to tedious setups.

Special Features and Future Potential

The S50 Pro can operate in equatorial mode with an optional mount, extending its astrophotography capabilities by allowing longer exposures without star trailing. This mode is especially valuable for deep-sky viewing, offering a blend of convenience and quality.

Conclusion

Despite its minor drawbacks, such as less portability compared to its predecessors, the Seestar S50 Pro has swiftly established itself as my favorite telescope. Its comprehensive capabilities make it an excellent choice for beginner and enthusiastic astronomers alike, ensuring that the magic of the night sky can be enjoyed on anyone’s terms.

With upcoming celestial events, including a total solar eclipse, I look forward to continuing my explorations with the S50 Pro.
