Downtown Astoria Shopkeeper: ‘All I Want Is My Mail’

The Astorian has reported increasing complaints from the local community about unreliable mail delivery. Businesses such as Cambium Gallery and Coffee Bar have experienced significant issues since mid-July, often receiving delayed mail or no mail at all. The owners, Audrey Long and Kirista Trask, have even conducted tests by sending postcards to themselves without receiving them. They have sought assistance from local officials and tried to meet with the Astoria Postmaster, who has not been responsive.

The mail delivery problems also affect city services. Astoria City Hall has reported missing water bills and misdelivered mail. Long expresses frustration at the lack of communication from the post office, emphasizing that the unreliable mail service has financial implications for her business.

Astoria’s Video Horizons, a local video rental store, voices similar concerns. New owner Coral Locke worries that persistent delays in receiving new stock could harm her business, especially during the winter season when local purchases are crucial.

With the upcoming midterm elections, residents are concerned about receiving their ballots in time. Clatsop County Clerk Tracie Krevanko reassures voters that if they haven’t received their ballots by October 21, they can confirm their status and request replacements. Voters are encouraged to mail their ballots a week before the election to ensure timely processing.

The ongoing issues have prompted The Astorian to reach out to various postal service representatives for answers, which have yet to be satisfactory. An audit by the USPS Office of Inspector General is underway, acknowledging the delivery problems in the region. The story remains developing, and residents are encouraged to report their mail issues to help address the situation.
