Assessing Constellation Energy (CEG): Are Long-Term Power Agreements Worth the Extra Cost?

Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) Secures Major Contracts with Tech Giants

Constellation Energy has recently signed two significant 20-year contracts, marking a substantial expansion. Following a notable agreement with Amazon for a 190 MW expansion at Calvert Cliffs, Google has pledged to secure 890 MW of new nuclear capacity on the PJM grid, serving 67 million customers. As the largest nuclear operator in the U.S., Constellation now manages 55 gigawatts of capacity across various energy sources, supplying power to approximately 2.5 million accounts, including 80% of the Fortune 100 companies.

The Importance of Long-Term Contracts

The value of Constellation’s long-term contracts lies in their duration and reliability. The company’s energy fleet provides around 10% of the nation’s clean energy, operating at a high capacity factor of 93.0% in Q2 2026. Moreover, Constellation has applied for extensions on certain reactors, aiming for operational longevity until 2049.

Earnings Guidance and Market Performance

In the latest quarter, adjusted operating earnings rose to $2.55 per share, up from $1.91 a year earlier, aided by Calpine’s acquisition and favorable market conditions. Despite this positive trend, GAAP earnings declined due to fair-value adjustments and nuclear outages. Management has raised full-year guidance to $11.50 – $12.50 per share.

With plans to invest over $4.3 billion to upgrade nuclear units in multiple states, Constellation is positioning itself for a fruitful future, although the returns on investments made towards Google’s contracts remain to be seen.

Investor Sentiment and Stock Valuation

The current price-to-earnings ratio stands at 22.04, reflecting a premium over the sector average of 16.94, but below its five-year average of 26.53. Although the company’s contract book and enhanced guidance indicate solid prospects, the more gradual EPS growth anticipated may temper immediate investor enthusiasm.

Overall, while Constellation Energy shows fair valuation amidst transitional factors, it remains to be seen how upcoming projects will influence financial returns and investor interest.
