Iran’s Advancements in Space Technology
New Satellite Launch Vehicles
Iran is progressing in the development of advanced satellite launch vehicles, notably the Phoenix carrier, which aims to place payloads of up to one ton into low Earth orbit. Hassan Salarieh, head of the Iranian Space Agency, shared these developments during World Space Week, emphasizing that work is underway on the Pars-2 satellite, which is currently being prepared for launch.
Shahid Soleimani Constellation
The Shahid Soleimani satellite constellation is expected to feature 24 satellites: 18 main and six backup. Three new satellites are set to be unveiled during the Ten-Day Dawn celebrations. While launches are anticipated this year, the timeline may shift based on ongoing compatibility tests.
Private Sector Involvement
Salarieh noted a thriving private sector in Iran’s space industry, with numerous companies dedicated to satellite manufacturing. Many focus on subsystems, with a robust collaboration in data services and remote sensing.
Role of Universities
Universities play a crucial role in developing advanced space technologies, collaborating with various governmental bodies on projects aimed at fostering innovative capabilities.
Biological Capsule Development
Iran is also developing a more sophisticated biological capsule, with a prototype launched in 2023. This advanced version is being designed for larger biological specimens, with a potential unveiling slated for 2027.
Upgrades to Launch Vehicles
The Iranian Defense Ministry is working on upgraded versions of the Simorgh and new Phoenix launch vehicles. Moreover, advancements in solid-fuel and liquid-fuel launch vehicles are underway, including the Qaim series.
Negotiations for International Launch
Iran is currently in talks to utilize foreign launch vehicles for the Pars-2 satellite, aiming to finalize a schedule post-testing.
Paya Satellite Operations
The Paya satellite, launched with Russian assistance, is operational, offering services, while two other satellites are in testing phases. Iran plans further satellite unveilings and expanding its capabilities in the coming years.
Radar Satellite Initiative
Work continues on Iran’s first radar satellite, with hopes for it to be unveiled this year or next. Additionally, Iran is collaborating with regional nations to enhance their space capabilities while offering technological services to other countries.
These developments reflect Iran’s commitment to expanding its presence in space exploration and satellite technology.
