NASA Grants SpaceX Three Missions to the Space Station with Crew Members

Editor’s Note: This feature was updated on Sept. 18, 2026, to add additional details on mission readiness dates.

To continue regular crew transportation to the International Space Station (ISS), NASA has awarded SpaceX three additional missions through a contract modification. This update brings SpaceX’s total missions to 17 as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) contract, ensuring ongoing access to the ISS with two commercial crew industry partners.

This modification, valued at $946 million, encompasses Firm Fixed-Price, Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity contracts for Crew-15, Crew-16, and Crew-17. The amount includes expenses related to ground and launch operations, in-orbit activities, return and recovery services, cargo transportation, and a lifeboat capability while docked to the ISS. The contract period extends through 2030, with mission readiness expected in 2027 and 2028, totaling $5.92 billion in the CCtCap contract with SpaceX.

This award follows NASA issuing a notice of intent in May to procure these additional missions. The current contract modification does not prevent NASA from pursuing further transportation service contracts if necessary.

In 2014, NASA awarded CCtCap contracts to Boeing and SpaceX as part of the Commercial Crew Program public-private partnership, certifying that a provider’s space transportation system meets the agency’s requirements before astronaut missions.

SpaceX was validated for crew transportation by NASA in November 2020, with its twelfth crew rotation mission, Crew-12, currently docked at the ISS. The missions utilize SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket to deliver up to four astronauts and essential cargo to the ISS.
