Carrollton Businesses Report Losses from Counterfeit Bills
Businesses in the Carrollton neighborhood are facing financial losses due to counterfeit bills, prompting them to implement new fraud prevention measures.
Key Incidents:
- Paul Tufaro, owner of Paulie’s Italian Deli, discovered a fake $100 bill after the bank rejected it. Initially, the bill appeared authentic, complete with ridges, but lacked a blue stripe.
- The deli lost $40 in change during the transaction along with the cost of a complimentary meal offered to the customer.
Other Affected Businesses:
- Euphorbia Kava and Coffee Bar has also dealt with counterfeit issues, reporting a loss of around $300 from several incidents last year. Manager Michael Donahoe noted the quality of some counterfeit bills and shared that after installing a bill detector, the problem has been largely addressed.
Preventative Measures:
- The Better Business Bureau advises businesses to be vigilant and carefully inspect bills, especially when lacking detection equipment. President Michael Drummond emphasized that quick checks could save businesses significant amounts of money, highlighting the broader implications of theft on company operations.
Future Actions:
- Tufaro mentioned that if the counterfeit problem continues, his restaurant may start requiring identification for customers paying with $100 bills.
