Uncertainty Surrounds Iran Nuclear Chief’s IAEA Participation Due to UN Travel Restrictions

Iran’s nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, is not expected to attend the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) annual General Conference in Vienna due to a United Nations travel ban. This contradicts reports from Iranian state media that claimed Eslami had departed Tehran with a delegation for the conference.

The situation highlights deteriorating relations between Iran and the IAEA, exacerbated by unresolved issues regarding access to nuclear sites damaged by earlier military strikes and concerns over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. Though Austria sought an exemption to allow Eslami’s attendance, the UN sanctions committee denied this request.

Iran’s nuclear program continues to face scrutiny, particularly following the restoration of UN sanctions after allegations that Iran deviated from its commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement. These sanctions include restrictions on travel and certain technologies, complicating Iran’s diplomatic efforts.

Eslami has regularly participated in the General Conference since taking office in 2021. The conference is crucial for discussing policy issues, including nuclear safeguards in the Middle East. However, due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the lack of access for IAEA inspectors to sites related to past military strikes, the situation remains tense.
