U.S. Justice Department Serves Subpoenas in Inquiry into Newsom’s Overseas Journeys | California

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is keeping details of subpoenas in a federal investigation regarding Governor Gavin Newsom’s international travel expenses private. Lauren Horwood, a public information officer, stated that subpoenas are not public records. Attempts by The Center Square to obtain these documents at courthouses in Fresno and Sacramento were unsuccessful, as no case numbers were assigned to them.

According to a report from The San Francisco Standard, subpoenas filed in early September request communications with Newsom and records spanning six years related to his international travel. The records involve the California State Protocol Foundation, which funds the governor’s travel, and reportedly has received over $7.5 million in donations.

Communications director for Newsom, Tara Gallegos, claimed the investigation is unfounded and likened it to tactics used by Donald Trump against his opponents, stating there is no crime to investigate.

The report also indicated that several of Newsom’s close associates, including his chief protocol officer and the COO of the Sacramento Kings, had their travel expenses covered by the foundation, which is under scrutiny. Attempts by The Center Square to reach those involved went unanswered by the time of publication.
