Letter to the Editor: An Energy-Efficient Approach to Fish Passage Over the Dam – Chico Enterprise-Record

The Oroville Dam significantly hinders the migration of Chinook salmon and steelhead, cutting off access to about 67 miles of crucial spawning habitat. While the Department of Water Resources (DWR) is currently trucking fish eggs to tributaries above Lake Almanor, this method only addresses the immediate problem and doesn’t provide a long-term solution for the fish.

One potential, low-energy solution to consider is developing a method that facilitates fish passage over or around the dam. Since salmon navigate back to their birth streams, creating a passage that mimics natural conditions could encourage them to spawn successfully. Possible strategies include:

  1. Fish Ladders: Constructing fish ladders can provide a way for fish to bypass the dam.
  2. Fish Bypasses: Establish a side channel or pipe that allows fish to travel around the dam.
  3. Modification of Dam Operations: Adjusting water levels or flow rates could make it easier for salmon to navigate.

Any approach should be carefully evaluated for environmental impact, cost, and effectiveness in allowing fish to return to their natural spawning grounds.
