Seoul Welcomes Festival Celebrating Russian and South Korean Cultures — Korea Herald

The Russia–Korea Culture and Arts Festival was recently held in Seoul, featuring performances from artists of both countries. The festival included dance presentations by the Moscow State Academic Dance Theatre “Gzhel,” which showcased the production “Dance Through Time” along with Russian folk dances. South Korean artists presented works inspired by Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” a choreographic piece titled “A Connection That Turned Into a Flame,” and a traditional Korean court dance called “The Palace.”

Key highlights from the event included remarks by Marina Kuklina, director of the Gzhel Theatre, who emphasized that dance transcends language. Former South Korean Minister of Culture Park Yang-woo noted the importance of culture in bridging gaps amidst political challenges.

The festival occurred against the backdrop of strained relations due to South Korea’s sanctions on Russia following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, the event attracted over a thousand attendees, including diplomats and cultural representatives, who gathered to foster dialogue and understanding through the arts.

Nikolay Kropachev, chair of the Russia–Korea Dialogue Forum, reiterated the need to preserve cultural ties, while Woo Yoon-keun acknowledged the role of cultural exchanges in fostering mutual respect and understanding despite political tensions.
