Local Travel Sports Group Expands Opportunities for Young Athletes
A local travel sports organization, the Allegheny Diamond Divas, is making strides in the Warren community by offering young athletes more opportunities to compete and develop their skills.
Founded by Adam Cassell in June 2025, the Diamond Divas began as a travel softball organization to provide girls with a chance to play beyond traditional league seasons. Initially supporting 10U, 12U, and 14U softball teams, the organization expanded in 2026 to include baseball with the addition of the 10U Allegheny River Rats.
Currently, the program features 12U and 14U softball teams as well as a 10U baseball team, aspiring to cater to boys and girls aged 8 to 18 in the future.
Kyle Johnson, co-founder and head coach of the 14U team, highlighted the organization’s aim, stating, “The typical community league season starts in late April and ends in early June. With the Diamond Divas, the girls can now play through the entire summer and into fall.”
The organization hosted its inaugural tournament, the Autumn Diamond Bash, on September 26-27 at the Farm Colony Complex in North Warren, featuring five teams in the 12U division and two in the 14U division. The 14U Diamond Divas clinched first place in their category, while Oil Valley Lightning won the 12U division.
Cody Sherbine, president of the organization’s board, noted that 10U River Rats players and their families provided vital support with concessions and field maintenance. Sherbine, initially coaching the 10U boys team, became president after being inspired by the organization’s potential for youth sports in the community.
The organization’s mission goes beyond competition. “Developing fundamentals outside of the yearly scheduled sports associated with schools is key for success,” Sherbine said. “It’s about equipping players to achieve their best both on and off the field.”
Johnson described the tournament’s success as a significant milestone. “It was a very fun and successful weekend,” he remarked.
Plans for the future include hosting more baseball and softball tournaments in 2027 and implementing indoor training during winter months to prepare for the upcoming season. Cassell emphasized that the mission transcends wins and losses: “It’s about learning teamwork, building confidence, and enjoying the sport.”
As the organization prepares for the next season, its continued growth relies on the commitment of board members, coaches, players, and families. Discussions about potentially developing a training facility are also underway as interest in the program continues to rise.
